This collection stands as a testament to her belief in designing spaces that reflect one’s individuality and her prowess in creating designs that resonate with her personal aesthetic narrative. Below, Serena Dugan shares insights into the creative process behind this captivating collection and her philosophy of what home means to her.

The diversity of your new collection is astounding, yet all elements come together in perfect harmony within your home. Could you share how this creative process unfolded?

SD: Each pattern and design element in the Spring ‘24 Collection was created with a specific vision for my home on Shelter Island. I had a clear idea of what I wanted each space to evoke, and while many designs were already a part of my line, there were instances where the right colorway or design was missing. This collection fills those gaps, bringing together a cohesive yet diverse narrative that echoes my aesthetic and artistic identity. For instance, the vision for my powder room was sparked by an incredible stone called Amazonite; I knew I wanted a bold pattern that complemented but stood out against this backdrop, leading to the creation of an entirely new design for the collection.

Have you ever second-guessed your design choices during this process?

SD: Designing with textiles, colors, and patterns is where I feel most at ease, so second-guessing my choices for those elements was rare. However, choosing bold tile designs pushed me out of my comfort zone. When feedback implied that a bathroom design might have been "a lot," I considered dialing it back. But I soon reminded myself that my home was meant to be a place of personal expression, not restriction. Embracing bold choices without fear has ultimately led to spaces that are not only unique but beloved by many, like the bathroom, which has turned out to be a favorite for many who visit.

What does 'home' mean to you?

SD: Home is more than just a physical space; it's where I find peace and where my heart resides. It's a reflection of my identity, values, and the life I've built, characterized by both aesthetics and functionality. Throughout different phases of my life, 'home' has encapsulated moments shared with family and close ones, making it the cornerstone of my world.
