Introducing Josh Greene's debut wallpaper collection at Fritz Porter. From the New York-based interior designer comes a refined and stylish collection of wallcoverings with a contemporary color palette. Featuring six unique patterns that draw inspiration from his West Coast upbringing, architecture, and landscape. We recently chatted with Josh Greene about his start in the design world and what inspired him to step into the world of textiles.
1. Tell us a bit about your start in the design world and what brought you to where you are now?
I originally started in fashion but changed to design in 2004 after seeing an exhibition of David Adler houses at the Art Institute in Chicago. I had always loved design and architecture though. I had met an architect named David Mann at MR Architecture + Décor when I was still working in fashion but I went to work for MR as an intern when I decided to change careers. It was my first foray into the field. Then I worked for Ralph Lauren, Michael Smith and Sawyer Berson before going out on my own.
2. Three words to describe your design style?
Textural. Comfortable. Refined.
3. Where do you find inspiration?
Travel. Art. New York City. Architecture. Museums. Historic house tours. Books. Stopping to read the historic plaques. Keeping my eyes open always and taking a minute to observe and figure out a detail.
4. What inspired the step into wallpaper?
I’ve always loved pattern and graphics and textiles. I think if I had gone into another field it would have been graphic design (or psychology!). One thing I realized after creating the line is that was that these designs are straight from my head to the world. My design work is tailored to the clients and while it is put through my filters and guidance, it is ultimately about them. The wallpaper is all about me and that was really rewarding because I didn’t realize that until I saw the final samples. It was really emotional. It’s just a very personal.
5. What should designers using your line keep in mind?
Some of these patterns are bold or maybe in colorways that they’re not comfortable using. Lean in to that. Don’t just do one wall. Do the room. The original designs are hand painted by an artist I collaborated with. You’ll feel that when you put them up.
