Sometimes the best finds come from the most unexpected places...
My mother always had antique booths at various venues while I was growing up, and I would tag along with her to shows, flea markets, and auctions. One of the best pieces of advice she gave me was, "Don't forget to look up....you never know what you might be missing."
And she was right. So often we miss what is right in front (or above) us because we are so distracted, disengaged with our surroundings, or have our faces permanently glowing from the luminescence of our iPhones.
My father, who could care less about antiques, shopping or design had another unique way of teaching this same lesson: Inverse flying. I know it sounds like a fancy aeronautic term, but really it is just what we called the (now highly illegal) act of riding around in the bed of my dad's Chevy pickup truck under a sleeping bag and looking....you guessed it....up.
My brother and I would have to guess where we were in town by nothing more than the glimpse of an inverted church steeple, a lamp post, or the cornice of a building seen from a different vantage point.
It was fun, we gained some perspective, and, thankfully, we never got arrested. #lookup #inverseflying
